Where Can I Go ( poem from "The Runaway" by Donna Nieri )

Where can I flee from Your
presence? If I ascend into
heaven, You are there.

If I dwell in the uttermost
parts of the sea, I cannot
hide, for You are with me.

I am cast into the depths
of waters,
my breath is taken from
me,

the ropes of death
encompass me, cords
bound me, even then
ropes are turned
to cords of love.

Torrents overwhelm me,
floods of destruction
sweep over me.

If I descend into hell,
You are there,
You set your eyes upon me.

Trudging unto the Valley
of Sheol, a valley of
death, where all hell
resides,

descending into the pit,
lit with fire, tombstones
of those who have gone
to sleep,

ones with a grimace on
their face,
ones with a smile, thinking
they have defied death
and prevailed.

Must I join these of dust,
a crypt saved for me?
Flames threaten to consume
me, but You are with me.

Where can I escape from
Your Spirit? If I say,
surely darkness will
steal over me, darkness

is no darkness for you
and night is as luminous
as day,

for I shall fly on the wings
of dawn, in the splendor of
the eastern sky.
